The Hillary Coronation Thread
In a McCain-Obama debate, viewers will need an alarm clock just to stay awake through McCain's monologues.
The whole "I'm reading awkwardly from a teleprompter, can't you tell?" gag just doesn't seem to be working.
This is going to be very interesting!
:tumbleweed:
Let Barack play nominee. See how he likes it when the right wing machine gets into him...
Are you claiming that: 1) there isn't generally a left wing bias in the major media? or 2) that Clinton didn't trade the Lincoln Bedroom for contributions, or 3) that Bush did do so, therefore Clinton's sale of the Bedroom wasn't "all that bad", or 4) none of the above.
Best, Dave
My husband asked him why he was out talking to people about Hillary.
He said 'can't vote for a....'
He said he just can't.
The N-word.
This is still Texas.
What will happen is anyone's guess. It's going to get really ugly.
Absolutely disgusting. I have nothing else to add.
So, how would I go about emailing Flyertalk to change my handle from Jailer to Director/Federal Bureau of Prisons? Not that S.C. Justice or JSCOTUS doesn't have a nice ring to it....better give a nod to Star Trek and call myself, 1 of 9.

I'm guessin' that Slim has already hit the road!! ;) :D
Dave
I'm guessing the former - but I'd be willing to bet a dozen donuts on it, if you'd like! :D

If she bows out gracefully and campaigns vigorously for Obama I could definately see her moving up in the senate, possibly replacing Reid in a short time. I would like to see all of that happen.
You're right. Most of them that I've heard/read deal with the interface between the corporate ownership of media and the actual reporting entities to whom their profits flow.
Unfortunately, when one examines the political leanings of those actually doing the WORK in these offices - one finds a considerable one-sidedness to the work force.
Plenty of people make the argument that this is: 1) not unusual, 2) unimportant, and 3) not leading to bias b/c of "professional journalism" ethics.
Problem is: doesn't work that way.
Oh well.
Please have a quick read at any one of Bernard Goldberg's well written, well annotated, and well researched books on the subject.
Then, get back to me - hopefully over a pint in a London pub. ;)

padding the tasteless post count?
Anyone can volunteer for a campaign. When you beg for volunteers you get the good, the bad and the ugly.
I don't have any doubt, nor dispute with whether or not someone at more than one time from headquarters was or was not at this site, or any site, of a political moment.
It doesn't change the fact that ownership is NOT the reason, nor the cause, nor the nexus of the bias in the media. It simply isn't.
My point is made more eloquently by Mr. Goldberg, a former CBS reporter, and admitted former liberal when he discusses the nature of the things that cause bias (most of which aren't recognized by those who practice them) in the MSM.
I would gladly send you a copy of the books if I had them, but I read them in the library.

Yeah, but if Obama is elected President, would he?
Under the conditions I specified I suspect so.
I think so, too. And I have to say, given how they treated Gore and Kerry, I'm feeling a little bit of karmic schadenfreude right now. Obama has potential, and I think he can do very well. So this is all working out well for everyone except the Clintons.
She lost me last night when she said that she could think of no better place to be than in El Paso.
El Paso?!?! Really?
There's no better place to be in Texas????
Seriously, my understanding of her campaign schedule in Texas is that it is focused on heavily-hispanic districts (she's even going to Robstown---home to a whopping 13,000 people; 93% of which are Hispanic). If her hopes of winning Texas are pinned on simply winning the Hispanic vote in South Texas, then she's going to lose Texas big.
It is all over except for the crying.
Yeah, I think that it is disrespectful that she can't even congratulate Obama on his wins there. Maybe she has...but she certainly didn't say anything to that effect in her "prime-time" speech.
One of the local drive-time radio hosts was mentioning that her "LastStand in Texas" approach to Obama's surge seems eerily similar to Guiliani's "LastStand in Florida" approach. :)
Not an auspicious beginning to a coronation, if you ask me. ;)

I’m hoping my donation to Obama gets me an ambassadorship, however. I wonder what $35 buys?
Ive sent him more like $500. It gets me a lot of very nice emails and an invitation to meet Michelle at a reception in Manhattan if I give them another grand ;)
Kidding aside, the campaign so far has been like a Swiss watch. I get an email before every major televised event, thanking me and telling me to tune in to the event and so forth. They are running a very, very tight ship so far.
This is, as I stated upthread, the essence of the argument that the news has a right-wing bias. It is nonsense in the respect that the ownership doesn't drive the agenda.
A reading of Mr. Goldberg's books will help you to understand why that is.
I know the saying. I also know that's NOT how the news media runs w/r/t slant.
Best, Dave
It isnt really an argument that he was there, as much as a fact.
I assume she's on a long trip w/o access to FT, so that is why I created this thread and have reserved post #2 for him. From his predictions it's just a matter of time before we crown Hillary the nominee.
$1,500 is nothing. I wonder what the maximum contribution would get you?
I got invited to meet Bush for $1000 although in a larger setting. I got invited to meet John Edwards for $150 and Bill Clinton for $5000. I think there is a pattern there ;)

Was at a pub in London last Saturday in fact. Too bad you werent able to join.
But to the book, does he talk about how the CEO of GE was on the floor of the newsroom at NBC in 2000 demanding that they call Florida for Bush. Sorry Dave, money talks, b******* walks as the say in Texas. And thats how the news media runs.
Im sorry, I can absolutely assure you that Hillary is NOT enjoying this.
He'll do just fine. Fearmongering is so last cycle. Hopemongering seems to be resonating this year. Attempts to stamp it out have been met with a mix of derision and disdain, but mostly bemused satisfaction that the old slings and arrows that have divided the country for so long appear to be ineffective.
Did you even see the contrast between Barack's victory speech last night in front of a sold-out crowd of 17,000+ and McCain's halting monologue? McCain is bringing a knife to a gunfight, if he thinks the Republican smear-tactics of the past few cycles are going to propel him to victory.
News reports so far have remarked that no mention was made at all during the El Paso rally, even though she took the stage when the results had already been called.
Obama campaign doubts Clinton can catch up (http://www.boston.com/news/politics/politicalintelligence/2008/02/obama_campaign_1.html).
I personally am delighted that the Clinton era of intellectual paternalism and entitlement might be over. I agree: Senator Clinton, remain in the US Senate where you are useful and capable. I would enjoy a national campaign between Obama and McCain.
Everything, that is, except for the "winning" part. That stuff, not so much. :D
Best, Dave
That's a good one!!
Thanks for the levity, I needed it this morning!

The examples are countless. If ignoring it amuses you whatever.
Im sorry, I can absolutely assure you that Hillary is NOT enjoying this.

I actually had a choice of meeting her at the reception in Manhattan or at a reception at Ned Lamonts (Democratic senate contender from Conn.) house in Greenwich. Same $1000 donation. Or I could be a co-host for like 10K.
Details, details! Only little people pay attention to details....
I'll repost here a link I posted in the Super Tuesday thread, very good reading and showed to me that Clinton focused on all the wrong details. They assumed they would win, and by Super Tuesday, so planned as far as that - which was why they ran out of money before Super Tuesday and Hillary had to loan the campaign money just to barely match Obama's advertising activities in Super Tuesday states. They spent a lot money, but on pollsters and consultants and hardly enough on get out the vote activities, and even just paying bills.

Her speech last night was not up to date or appropriate. A complete throw away.
People here are already talking about her pandering and the result on immigration policies she would agree to.
Retailers will absolutely do anything to avoid a $9.75 minimum wage. Small businesses will not be able to afford employees.
$9.75 likely doesn't sound like much to someone who thinks with a New York state of mind, but here it is a huge increase and a real problem. My company's solution to that wage rate will be to avoid hiring people in that catagory. Just do without.
We have already cut janitorial services from 5 nights a week to 4 and will cut to 3 if the price goes up to reflect the higher (HRC) minimum wage.

:tumbleweed:
Particularly appropriate for a campaign appearance in West Texas!
I think you're exactly right - which is why McAuliffe and WJC and the Clintonistas have been planning this thing to come off "quickly" JUST so that some upstart didn't upend her run for POTUS.
While I'm probably more in tune with HRC on matters foreign, while less so domestically, I think it might be fun to see Obama wuup her "entitled" butt just so I could see their collective reactions!
FUN, I tell ya. :D

BTW, are we allowed to mention her
In a webcast, prestidigitator Penn Jillette talks about a joke he has begun telling in his show. He thinks the thunderous reaction it gets from audiences shows that Hillary no longer has a shot.
The joke goes: “Obama is just creaming Hillary. You know, all these primaries, you know. And Hillary says it’s not fair, because they’re being held in February, and February is Black History Month. And unfortunately for Hillary, there’s no White ..... Month.”
A Flawed Feminist Test (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/13/opinion/13dowd.html?em&ex=1203051600&en=b09392a8dc85284d&ei=5087%0A)
Yeah, but if Obama is elected President, would he?
I'm an over 60 woman. I'm likely going to vote for Obama first and if Hillary Clinton takes the nomination, I'll vote for McCain.
Hillary absolutely lost us last night when she said her minimum wage would start at $9.75. Can't stay in business with that wage level.
Not only no questions asked, but they printed story after story that turned out to be false that supported the administration.
That's all it takes? Seriously?
$1,500 is nothing. I wonder what the maximum contribution would get you?
She'll run for a third term (and coincidentally, remain married to Bill) for a big reason: Chelsea. Because Hillary may hope that Chelsea one day sort of becomes her John F. Kennedy (to Joe Kennedy). And so for appearance's sake, she continue soldiering on as she has done.
I'd say 2016 is a safer bet! :)
Her speech last night was not up to date or appropriate. A complete throw away.
I think that was by design, because many noted that her Super Tuesday speech was timed perfectly for the late news time slot whereas everybody else missed. Everything strikes me as meticulously planned for the Clinton campaign.
I'd say their chances of getting their bills paid are slim to none.

So what will Obama raise it to? Anyone? I've checked his Blueprint, and all I see is:
Barack Obama will raise the minimum wage, index it to inflation...
Again, looking for specifics and coming up short. What if he plans to raise it to $10? As much as I too oppose Hillary's plan, at least she is specific.
...
Me neither, I'd never vote for a neocon.
I’m hoping my donation to Obama gets me an ambassadorship, however. I wonder what $35 buys?

Yes Reid needs to be sent to the showers pronto.
Obama campaign doubts Clinton can catch up (http://www.boston.com/news/politics/politicalintelligence/2008/02/obama_campaign_1.html).
I don't see as smug but rather just spin as usual and really leveraging on his momentum to draw in those who love to back a winner. Get those superdelegates who were tetering in his favour to take the plunge. Change the way the (already friendly) media packages the race. Drive the media agenda and have Clinton play catch-up, and it seems to already be working:
An Obama spin win (http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0208/An_Obama_spin_win.html)
A Democratic operative notes a bit of a victory in the spin wars:
The news organizations counting and referring to the delegate count have started much more clearly breaking out the pledged delegates from the superdelegates, and referring to the pledged delegates as a key metric.
That matches David Plouffe's contention this morning that "the pledged delegate leader will be the nominee."
Howard Wolfson's counter-spin, on the conference call:
We are not making distinctions between certain kinds delegates. We don’t make distinctions between delegates that are chosen by millions of voters in a primary or tens of thousands of voters in a caucus. We don’t make a distinction between elected officials.
And in Hillaryland, MD/VA/DC never happened.
El Paso?!?! Really?
There's no better place to be in Texas????
I was just in El Paso last week, and I can think of plenty of better places to be, in and out of Texas. (Glad I missed that circus, BTW.)
Agree with the previous posters on HRC's strategy--this deal was supposed to have been closed on or before Super Tuesday; otherwise, she'd never have been trying to claim any kind of special love for El Paso. I don't think there's any gas in the tank.
Agreed. Unfortunately, I was in Taipei having one of the best Peking Duck dishes I've ever had. :D

Will we see Clinton v. Obama, like we saw Bush v. Gore?
Better stock up on popcorn, now.
:D

Sleeping in the Lincoln Bedroom for sure. Whether or not Michelle is there during your "stay" is a completely separate matter, IIRC. ;)

Actually it is interesting that you mentioned that. When the Enron story was unraveling, the NYT reported that of course Ken Lay had stayed at the White House when Bush was president but also when Clinton was. Trouble is, the part about Clinton was from a right wing blog and wasnt true. The Times didnt retract it, on page 3x whatever as opposed to page 1 for the story, for a substantial period of time. I think it was a couple of weeks. Just another example of that left wing media bias I suppose.
If you need a good laugh, go ahead and click.
My favorite quote from that site (I am not an HRC supporter, but this is funny):
"The nation cannot afford another indigestible waffle." :D
I think she runs for a third term, but would she be a career Senator like Ted Kennedy (another Senator who lost a primary fight (to Jimmy Carter in '80) and never ran for President again, but has remained in the Senate for another 28 years and counting)?
Did you know him in high school too? :D
Not in OMNI. You'd have to drop by the UA forum for that to work.
In a McCain-Obama debate, viewers will need an alarm clock just to stay awake through McCain's monologues.
Well as Keith said on MSNBC last night, one thing McCain should have learned by now is NEVER speak after Obama. :)
:D :D
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5FvyGydc8no
It's so bad you half expect the video to wrap with "I'm Barack Obama and I approve this ad."
Isn't Clinton even using the same campaign line as Guilliani? The whole "ready, tested" line?
If so, it seems to me that she might want to make sure the campaign signs don't add a "gonna lose" to the end of that line.
This past Sunday's NYT had a good piece on how the entire campaign is in disbelief over what has transpired over the past two months. Nobody in the campaign is enjoying this.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHA!!!! :D :D :D
That's a good one!!
Thanks for the levity, I needed it this morning!

McCain needs a new speech writer. I'm guessing that he speaks well during campaign events (I've never seen him, but I guess he's personable), but his victory speeches are a slumber-fest.
