*A arrivals lounge at AKL?

  • Hi :) I've got a 6 hour wait at AKL from around midnight to 6am after flying in on SQ. Are there any arrivals lounges there that I can access as a *G?

  • I know WLG airport does indeed close for about 3-4 hours, CHC similarly. So wouldnt be too surprising if AKL did too.

I cant say for sure, but have left there after 2am (late arrival) and the place looked pretty dead to me.

  • Thanks SH. Actually I'm flying on with Qantas not SQ and have zero status with them, so it looks like it's going to be sleeping in a corner somewhere :( :D

  • Doesn't sound like a lot of fun. What a nightmare, after clearing security etc it'll probably be 11.30pm and there just doesn't seem any point going to a hotel given check in will be open at least at 4am - I'd only get about an hour in bed. This is what happens when other people book your flights for you :(

It would seem unlikely that the entire airport would close for the 3 hours or so - I know the ones here are open all the time, even Stanstead - with some pepole turning up late the night before to hang about for a very early flight plus people coming in from delayed flights, there'd just be no point. But who knows, guess I'll find out whether I get kicked out into the cold or not.

  • I can't quite believe my Google search turned up any results but this site would suggest I'll probably be ok - worth a look, tres amusing :D

  • Just a quick question. I am a Star Gold with a Guest.
Now the departure from AKL is scheduled at 1.05am on SQ. So what does that mean no lounge access at all after 11pm?. Is that the only star lounge ?

The NZ lounge is indeed the only *A lounge at AKL, but dont worry it'll stay open until the flight leaves. I have flown SQ282 pre-daylight saving (so an hour earlier) and even then it was last flight out and lounge stayed open for it.

  • Kiwi Flyer thanks for that - that's very helpful. I presume I can stay in the terminal overnight and there isn't any time where the whole airport closes?

gratn - thought about that but decided it really isn't worth it, I'd need to be back at the airport for 4.30 and won't be in until 12 so for the time, I really can't be bothered to lug everything to a hotel and back again.

  • Well, I'm here now (about 2.35am) and I have to say there could be much less pleasent places to spent six hours or so.

The upper floor is nice and peaceful, virtually deserted apart from a handful of people sleeping on the sofas etc. There is also 24 hour food open on the ground level.

I'm particularly happy as I've not only found a power point for my laptop but also an unsecured wireless network, which combined with the Bose QC2s has made for a pretty productive working session :D

    ^ ^ ^

Nice to read something positive about AKL airport for once! :)

  • Glad to read it's working out for you. Safe onward travels...

  • You might want to think about going to one of the hotels near the airport. They aren't flash, but for less than $NZ100 they will be much more comfortable than the floor. Try www.wotif.com for options - but note you can only book within 14 days of arrival. The hotels mostkly have shuttles, although they may not be running late at night. A taxi will be about $NZ15 or so one way (I think).

  • Good luck, Gaz - let us know whether they do shut the whole place down or not, it would be interesting to know.

  • Sorry Mad-atta , I meant on the departure from AKL on SQ. I modified my original post.

  • AKL airport lounges shut around 11pm (depending on timing of last departing flight) and dont reopen until 4:30am.

I dont think you can stay airside overnight as immigration & customs closes shop around 2am, reopens at 4:30am.

As there are plenty of early departing flights around 6-7am, and airlines keep telling pax to turn up early, there are generally big queues at immigration doors from about 4am. Check-in opens well before 4am (not sure exactly when - its open whenever I have arrived for the early flights).

Dont forget to get departure tax exemption sticker (as staying in NZ less than 24 hours) from BNZ counter to avoid paying the NZ$25 tax.

  • There are no STARGold arrivals lounges anywhere. Many airlines maintain their own arrivals lounges for premium and elite customers at certain home airport gateways. However, unless there is a commercial arrangement between those and other carriers, elite status or even flying business or first class will not get you into these lounges where they exist.

The only STAR lounge at AKL is the NZ lounge, which is open to STARGolds with onward flights on STAR carriers. As you are flying on SQ, and hold STARGold status, you would be able to use the Business Class side of the regular NZ lounge. There are showers that can be used in this facility. However, since you arrive at midnight and depart at around 6am, I am not sure this lounge would even be open during those hours.

  • AIAL-wide WiFi only came online on Aug 3rd - so you timed your visit well! Actually, I imagine AKL would be best when there's no one there :D

The new departures level comes into action next Friday (16 Sep); it'll be interesting to watch.

  • Half ashamed to admit it, but you definately can sleep airside at AKL and it's pretty comfortable too :D. Best place to camp out is those nice long sofa benches by gate 4. Security come around in the night to check everyone's passports and onward tickets, but otherwise it's quiet, and I've even been able to through-check my bags. Beats any airport hotel on short overnight layovers (providing you have lounge access to get a shower in the morning). A few drinks on the flight into Auckland help as well ;).

    Cheers, Zac

Wow! I never knew about that! :-: Thanks, Kiwi Flyer. I wish I learned about this a few months earlier as I paid NZ$25 last time.

  • Note also the transfer desk can only issue boarding passes for Air New Zealand and certain other airlines (ie for some you'll need to either go landside or get at the gate when it opens an hour or so before the flight).

  • Just a quick question. So there is no arrivals lounge. We are arriving on SQ in Y at 11am and I am a Star Gold. Now the departure is scheduled at 1.05am. So what does that mean no lounge access at all. Is that the only star lounge ?

What airline are you departing on? If it's a *A carrier you'll have lounge access, if not, you won't - simple as that.

Having said that, would you want to spend 14 hours in an airline lounge??

  • Gaz - are you sure you're in AKL? ;)

    Glad it worked out okay.

  • It's pretty much closed after 11pm - only open for the evening flights arriving from australia and SQ's arrival. That said I dont think (not 100% sure) that landside totally shuts up - but dont think it would be very comfortable, dark, cold, nothing open except toilets.
