Oz advice request

  • I'm planning a trip to Australia for an extended March break with the wife and kids and need some advice from the various experts around here. We're going for three weeks and hoping to get a stopover in HNL in at least one direction. Right now I'm planning on getting 3 reward tickets and paying for my own ticket (need those status miles!!) The ideal dates would be: Mar 11, YYZ-HNL; Mar 19, HNL-SYD; Apr 1, SYD-YYZ.

I'm not willing to risk flying in the back though, and I'll only be Elite in March (I'm SE now) so I'll need an M or Y ticket to u/g at time of booking assuming the rules stay the same next year. The cheapest Y ticket YYZ-SYD is $4,365. That fare allows stopovers, but there's no J or C space between HNL and SYD. So, I can book YYZ-SYD (3 D rewards, 1 Y u/g to C) right now, but I can't have a HNL stopover in either direction. I phoned the SE desk and they said that HNL-SYD segment is zeroed out in C/J in both directions even though the YVR-SYD flight has lots of space. I seem to remember a discussion about this issue in the past. Do they open up the SYD legs closer to the date of travel? I'll be able to instant KK the J seats I need up until the end of February.

Given that an AC D reward is 115K points and a *A reward is only 100K, is there an easy way to tack on a leg with another *A carrier to turn the AC award into a *A one? The pure AC award allows 2 stopovers (or a stopover and an open jaw), while the *A award allows only 1 plus an open jaw.

I'm also looking for other (more innovative?) ideas. Any suggestions as to alternate routings on other *A carriers? Given that I want status miles and to travel in business class, AC seems like my easiest option. I'd consider stopovers in NRT,HKG or SIN, then on to SYD. Are there any other fares I should be looking at, like the circle-Pacific? The $4,000 Y fare mentioned above is at the high end of what I'm willing to pay.

Yes they do. The same applies to YVR-HNL and HNL-YVR; they zero out J/C. This trip is a regular commute for me and I typically make my booking a few days before the flight when suddenly J0/C0 becomes J9/C9.

  • I'm not sure I'd want to pay lots of points fo NZ J. The seats are much like our domestic 767s

  • I know it's not your style to book a ticket more than 2 days out, but any insight into how far in advance they free up the individual legs?
On the basis of my most recent experience (HNL-YVR last week), it seems to be 2-3 days. I was able to book a westbound YVR-HNL segment 5 days in advance.

  • Dont forget NZ operates HNL-AKL and heaps of flights from AKL-SYD. Mileage isnt too much more than direct (certainly less than via NRT).

Also the option of going via LAX or SFO and AKL on NZ. LAX-AKL (and then AKL-SYD) flight at least connects well with AC YYZ-LAX and vv. But can you do different routing for different directions on Aeroplan award?

Not sure how it works in terms of Aeroplan awards though.

I suppose I could book it all straight through now and then hope something opens up before the end of Feb while I can still instant KK the reward tickets. That's likely what I'll do there's no better solution proposed here.
