Advice on securing saver award?

  • Hello,

I've been planning a trip from YVR->MCO for a while now in early December 2006.

I also have checked some dates and found saver awards available in that time period just a a week or 2 ago, but now it appears to be all booked up/gone. (Looks like I should've just booked it then)

I understand that this is common for a popular tourist destination. My question is if anybody would know usually how many days out when Alaska would release more seats for saver awards?

Any other tips for me to secure a saver award for that flight would be much appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

  • yeah but I'm pretty sure they do have a magic date/number too because i remember being in the same situation then about a month before the flight award seats showed up (i was checking them regularly) and i booked it - so there's still hope

with award tix on AS i think one of the best things about being MVPG is that you can just change/cancel them with no fee - so I usually book stuff way way ahead and if plans change i let it go - with award, if you wait too long, they're gone ;(

  • Inventory is automatically updated 360, 180, 90, 60, 30, 21, 14, 10, and 7 days before departure. I am doing this from memory, so actual numbers may vary. :) However, you can use this as a general guideline as to when seats may become available. In addition, manual updates by an analyst can occur at any time prior to departure.

  • If saver awards don't show up and only peak awards are available, check and see if there's any first class seats as they're the same 40,000 miles.

  • Keep checking. I had this happen to me when I was booking near the "window". One day there, then gone. A few days later there again...and then the seat was mine :) It may be someone playing with inventory, a partner like BA may have it on hold for someone only to release it. As far as more seats later, someone else will have to answer that one.

  • In addition, manual updates by an analyst can occur at any time prior to departure.

In addition to this wildcard, other factors like cancellations or schedule/aircraft changes can cause inventory to fluctuate.

For example, if a few people or a group cancels, that may open up that flight as inventory just becomes available. Or, if an aircraft is upsized in a schedule change, award buckets may open up. Or if a schedule change causes many people to have an illegal connection, they may get rebooked onto an alternate flight, opening up seats on the original flights.

...and so on. There are so many variables...
